Meet the Coach...

Coaches of cheerleading carry the formidable load of creating both poised leaders and skilled athletes. According to Jim Lord, cheerleading is engrained in the fabric of the American community with nearly every school having a cheerleading squad that participates in spirit leadership and school pride functions. At the same time, the sideline spirit activity has evolved with more complicated skills and stunts that require a higher level of athletic ability than ever before. Cheerleading is about spirit leadership, community outreach, and school and team pride.

Coach Amie King

This is my 3rd year with the football squad; first year as the Head Coach. Last season was my first year with the Basketball Cheerleaders. My family includes Jay, Ariel, and Aslan, our Rottweiler. I've been married 7 years. I'm entering my 5th year teaching, & my 4th at Cape Henlopen High School. I am certified in English Language Arts and Math. I am teaching journalism, math, and yearbook this year. I advise both the Valhalla Yearbook and Viking Ventures Student Newspaper. This will be my 2nd year as a Lead Mentor for the Cape District. My favorite colors are green, yellow, and blue.

An explosion in popularity combined with the continued progress in athleticism and skill has reinforced the need for safety education, awareness, and updated regulations. I know it is my responsibility to continuously review safety procedures and materials to ensure we are up to date with the latest information available.

I have been AACCA (American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors) Safety Certified since 2006. This course is recognized as the standard of care for cheerleading safety and covers the following topics:

  • - A Philosophy of Safety Awareness
  • - Understanding and Assessing Legal Liabilities
  • - Medical Responsibilities
  • - Environmental Safety Factors
  • - Spotting and Cheerleading Safety
  • - Performer Readiness
  • - Cheerleading Skill Progressions
  • - Levels of Participation and
  • - Educational and Safety Materials

I also passed the NCA (National Cheerleaders Association) Comprehensive Coaches Certification Test in 2007. The NCA test covers these areas as they apply to cheerleading:

  • - Stunting Technique
  • - Risk Management
  • - Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries
  • - Motivation & Ethics for Coaches
  • - Effective Practices
  • - Team Building
  • - Developing Leadership Skills
  • - Critiquing Your Squad
  • - Strength Training and
  • - Effective Discipline

I am member of the National Federation High School Spirit Association. Through communication, education and recognition, the NFHS Spirit Association supports cheerleading coaches by assisting them in risk management, good sportsmanship and citizenship, and professional development.
