Cape Cheerleaders Step Up Their Traditions

The thirteen 2009 Cape Henlopen High School Football Cheerleaders recently attended a private National Cheerleaders Association summer camp. Squad members are Nicole Bishoff, Ne'kea Blackwell, Lauren Bledsoe, Taylor Capozzoli, Danielle Christensen, Heather Cross, Katelyn Goldsborough, BreAshia Hazzard, Noelle Houston, Elise Matalavage, Alexis Maull, Maddee Steiner, and Hollie Wartman. The camp was led by the squad's NCA Buddy Instructor Amanda Matz. The squad worked together for three arduous days and was rewarded with numerous individual and team awards.

The Viking Cheerleaders were most proud to receive a National Championship Bid. Teams that receive this tremendous accomplishment have been evaluated by their buddy on a list of requirements, including having positive attitudes and showing good sportsmanship. This bid is extended to teams to compete at the NCA Senior & Junior High School National Championship or the NCA Spirit Championship.

Cape also boasts six All-American Nominees this year. These outstanding individuals displayed superior cheerleading techniques. Nicole and Heather were both chosen for their leadership capabilities, Ne'Kea was selected for her lofty jumps, Danielle and BreAshia represented strength in stunts, and Elise displayed impressive motion technique. These individuals qualify to perform at various NCA Special Events including the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The most prestigious individual award is to be an All-American Team Member. These exceptional individuals exemplified the best cheerleading skills during the All-American Team Tryout. These skills include three advanced jumps, a perfected Camp Cheer, spirit and enthusiasm, voice projection, and overall crowd appeal. Congratulations to the following ladies who were selected to be a member of the NCA All-American Team: Nicole, Ne'Kea, and both captains Danielle and Heather. These individuals are also eligible to perform at an NCA Special Event. Lauren summed it up best: "During camp this year we all learned a lot, including how to be a better team. It was sometimes frustrating and hard, but at the very end, we were all brought closer together from the experience."
